Dresden

We were in Dresden just a few hours for lunch. We wandered around the Opera House and cathedral area, and found a McDonalds that had beer on the menu. We also visited the Green Vault, which housed an astounding collection of royal jewelry. Sadly, no photos were allowed of this collection.

I noticed all the old buildings were so black as to appear stained and dirty. I asked why they weren't sandblasted to remove the grime, and was told that the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the air was so high that the resulting acid rain would turn a sandblasted building black again within a few days. I guess that means Europe hasn't solved its air pollution problems yet.
